Style Notes With Mel Carrero
Style Notes With Mel Carrero
More and more we are witnessing (and loving) pregnancy style expressed as a continuation of identity rather than a detour. Mother, friend and brand director of Spell, Mel Carrero is one of these very women, empowering others to embrace this stage. Here she reveals her notes on pregnancy style and her wardrobe heroes.
What has been key for you when it comes to holding onto your style during pregnancy?
I think in many ways I find it EASIER to style when pregnant. I feel less self conscious of my body because I’m willing to show off my stomach, which when I’m not pregnant can be a place I am more self conscious of holding weight!
Outside of this I always try and have fun and be bold with style, regardless of being a curvy or “plus size” woman!
How has your relationship with your evolving body and bump been similar or different to other pregnancies?
Pretty similar however now 33wks pregnant, I feel much much bigger than I was this stage last time - also just slower and more uncomfortable!

What Creative Project Are You Most Proud Of?
It’s hard to say one creative project I am proud of exactly as with an 11 year body of work marketing with Spell it can be difficult to choose. One that perhaps created most meaning was working with Bundjalung artist Kylie Caldwell on our Spell x Kylie Caldwell collaboration, as it had so much feeling, learnings and meaning to her, the artist and us as a brand, and myself personally.
What has been the most rewarding thing about your motherhood journey so far?
The most rewarding thing about motherhood so far is watching my son’s curiosity grow. He asks me so many questions I can’t answer and he’s 4!

Which pieces have you added into your wardrobe since becoming pregnant?
Fold over fisherman pants by Robey - the best! Bumpsuit stretchy dresses and of course my lace iamibu set - I wore this to a girls lunch the other day and people went nuts for the colour - plus it’s so comfortable and a beautiful way to show off the bump with the cascading ruffles.
What have been your hero pieces?
Probably the new additions above, and since is summer my BOKUMAIA bikinis with sarongs!

Dressing with intention can hold so much power, especially when many things are shifting during motherhood. How does style and dressing empower you during this stage?
100% - I recall postpartum that if I made the slightest effort I felt a bit more together and productive during the day rather than rotting in something I felt horrid in. I also tried to make sure anything I purchased for pregnancy is wearable after too. I did cave first pregnancy and get some jeans with a stretch waist but I also sent them to a friend for her pregnancy and she sent them back for this so I at least feel they’ve had some extra mileage!
