Notes on Inspiration behind luxury homewares store, CLO Studios

Featuring a considered and colourful curation of homewares and furniture, CLO Studios boutique was founded by Chloe Tozer in sunny Noosa, Queensland. A lover and collector of beautiful pieces for the home, Chloe has also applied her talent to interiors for clients Australia-worldwide.

CLO was originally conceptualised by you and your mother. Would you say your mother’s experience as an interior designer and her creative world have influenced your work today?

My creativity flows from a place deep within me, a gift passed down from my mother. I grew up in a family business where my parents owned hotels, Mum took care of the design and from a young age I would help her. It was a very social and colourful environment, and I think that’s where my love for not only design but connecting and working with people comes from.

Every detail feels so considered in the space. How would you describe the overall aesthetic of the space? What do you hope for people to feel when entering the space?

Our boutique is about celebrating artisanal skill, and traditional methods of creating. The foundations of CLO Studios were built from my experiences travelling and being inspired by culture and stories.

I think there is something so beautiful about bringing together different objects from opposite corners and sharing them in a modern context. Our boutique is warm and inviting, colourful in nature and we hope a place of inspiration to our community.

What does a normal day look like for you?

I love to rise with the sun. I start my day with a walk on the beach with our dog or morning pilates at Bare Bones in the Noosa Junction. I water my roses and make time for breakfast before heading into our design studio. Once I get to the studio, each day is always different. Working alongside our team and clients I am collaborating on interior design projects, designing our CLO core furniture collection, on site watching our projects come together and coordinating collections with our artisans.

Can you share some of your favourite things about living in Noosa?

Being so connected to the environment! Living by the sea is an inspiration, it’s grounding and extremely beautiful. My weekends revolve around having my feet in the sand, hands in the garden and heart in the kitchen. My rituals are designed to disconnect and recharge and living in Noosa makes this possible.

CLO has such a beautiful and unique style, what key things are you looking for when sourcing pieces from artisans?

If I don’t love it, I don’t buy it. It’s important to me to love what I’m sourcing and designing. My style is inspired by the old – craftsmanship, history and the arts. I love colour and texture, contrasting materials and the juxtaposition between the new and old-world. Treasured spaces or pieces that are spirited and create an emotional response are what I’m drawn to.

What has being a business owner and creative professional taught you about yourself? Do you believe there are particular gifts we have as women when it comes to business?

Being a business owner has its challenges for sure, the constant juggle of finding balance. It has taught me to be a stronger person, when I started the business, I was 21, so 9 years ago. I had no fear and dove headfirst into building an empire. It wasn’t until last year, where I was forced to stop for a moment, reflect and reset. For so long I thought in order to be successful I had to keep growing my team, resources and project portfolio. Not realising I was getting further away from what I really wanted to do and set out to achieve, which was to simply ‘create’. Women definitely have super powers, and in time, I can’t wait to be a mother and business owner.

How does working in interiors influence how you dress? Would you say it has evolved over the years?

I’m always drawn to colour and detail, whether it's for my wardrobe or home. Quality over quantity. I’m drawn to pieces with character, that are almost theatrical in appearance. I find my fashion inspires my design and vice versa. I usually catch myself dressing like the interiors I'm designing at the time. We are so lucky in Australia to have such an incredible female network of designers and brands who I admire and this will always be my first choice when considering a new piece for my wardrobe or home.
